This abstract discusses ongoing work on M$^3$, a novel system which combines linear types and staged computation, with support for runtime code generation and references. Most interestingly, by enforcing the requirement that all references must themselves be linear, we allow references to store arbitrary values, even quotations of variables. Scope extrusion is forbidden through the linear type system, which causes all open quotations to eventually become meaningful before they are used. In order to support evaluation under lambda terms and substitution within references, we also equip references with a notion of contextuality.
